Wings That Hold a Story

The Angel Wings display you see at Templars Square have long been a popular backdrop for festive selfies and family portraits.

This year, it carries extra meaning as we honour the friend and daughter of the two women who brought the idea to life. The Angel Wings were installed as a surprise for Abby’s friends and family, a celebration of her spirit, her strength and the joy she brought to everyone around her.

In Loving Memory of Abby

Our beautiful daughter Abby was a talented young designer, prop maker and armourer who died in October 2022 after battling cancer for 15 months.

Abby loved life and the theatre. Growing up in Oxford she worked with the Oxford Playhouse, Pegasus and Creation Theatre as well as with theatres across the UK and abroad. She had such a passion for theatre, wanting everyone to enjoy it, she loved working with schools to encourage this. Abby had a special affinity with Cowley Centre, she played Cinderella in one of the Centre’s Christmas Events while still at school and worked with Christmas Creation who have been responsible for the festive decorations here for the last three years.

She moved from theatre design to prop making and then specialised in armoury, making some of the swords used in Game of Thrones. Just before her diagnosis, she had been appointed Senior Armourer at the Royal Opera House in London.

Money raised at Templars Square will go to the Oxford Hospitals Charitable Trust to thank all the medical staff who cared for her, doing amazing work, often in very difficult circumstances.
