Marking 100 years of Pressed Steel in Cowley
We’re hosting a special exhibition this August marking 100 years since the Pressed Steel Company was founded in Cowley.
From 23rd to 29th August, come and explore a free Classic Cars Display, representing different eras and marques connected to the Pressed Steel story. The display will also showcase a range of products associated with the company, highlighting the breadth of its manufacturing history.
While Pressed Steel is best known for producing car panels and complete vehicle bodies for manufacturers across the UK, its work extended far beyond the automotive industry. On display will be a Prestcold fridge, a helmet, jerry cans and other items linked to the Cowley works.
One of the highlights of the exhibition is the former Pressed Steel works ambulance. Although its body may not have been manufactured in Cowley, it served at the site and provides a direct connection to the people who worked there.
The exhibition has been organised by local resident and Cowley car enthusiast Tanya Field. Tanya said: “Pressed Steel is a major part of Cowley’s history and so many local families have a connection to the works. It’s good to be back at Templars Square to mark its centenary and share some of that history with the local community.”
Alongside the vehicles, visitors can view historic photographs and memorabilia that showcase Pressed Steel’s contribution to Cowley’s industrial and automotive heritage.
Carla, Centre Manager at Templars Square, said: “Pressed Steel is a big part of Cowley’s history and many people in the area have their own connection to the works. We’re pleased to host the display and give visitors the chance to see some of the cars and other items linked to its story.”
The display is free to attend and will be open during normal centre hours from 10am on Sunday 23rd August until late afternoon on Saturday 29th August. Vehicle owners will also be on hand on selected days to answer questions and share the stories behind their cars.
