Little Wales – Cowley’s Connection
As part of our community art project, we’ve uncovered fascinating connections between the Cowley area and Wales.
With St David’s Day approaching, we’re celebrating this heritage where Cowley and Florence Park have been affectionately known as ‘Little Wales’. You can also see a mural reflecting this outside Larkrise Primary School.
Below is a film from the Film Oxford Showcase, that explores the migration of Welsh people to Oxford in the 1920s and 1930s. Many Welsh ex-miners settled in Cowley and Florence Park, with Florence Park becoming known to some as “Little Wales” or “Little Rhondda.”
A huge thank you to everyone who contributed memories and information for the art project. The final artwork will be unveiled later this spring – stay tuned to our social media pages for updates.
